Crowd All Sweaty at Southdown Fitness Night
A crowd of more than 125 students and parents turned out for Southdown Primary School’s fun-filled Fitness Night. They all got a good physical and intellectual workout.

Southdown’s February Stars Shine
Southdown Primary School stepped into February after a sensational month of February. Southdown honored its Stars of the Month after the youngsters made a positive impression on everyone in the building.

Southdown’s December Stars of the Month Honored
While 2022 might already be a distant memory, Southdown Primary School’s Stars of the Month for December are justifiably still taking a few bows to applause from their classmates, teachers and parents.

Southdown Bounds into 2023 with Sense of Wonder
The Southdown Primary School community bounded into 2023 with a sense of wonder and excitement. There’s something new each day at the building and that keeps students energized and enthusiastic. From classroom initiatives to social events sponsored by the PTA, there’s a lot on the agenda in the new year.

Southdown Crowns its Star Students
Winning a Splash Award at Southdown Primary School is a big deal. After all, the school’s mascot is a dolphin, an aquatic mammal that’s known to saturate those nearby with water from all their flipping around. Ever see the 1960’s television show, Flipper?

Southdown Splash Star Student Awards Presented
Southdown Primary School just loves to celebrate its students. So when Principal Jill Amott-Erwig announced October’s Southdown’s Splash Star Student Award winners it was a really big deal.

With the new school year well underway at Southdown Primary School, students are starting to hit their stride as they go about their business around the building and in and out of classrooms.

Southdown Primary School is a place where children flourish in an academic environment of respect, encouragement and high expectations. The faculty and staff is extraordinary; comprised of early childhood specialists who value and encourage children to explore, create and make meaning from the world around them. Learning is child-centered and tailored to the unique needs of all students.
Learning in the 21st Century
Southdown is proud of the many enhancements to its curricular program over the past several years. Every student has access to a Chromebook that is integrated throughout the school day as a means to enhance student engagement and further learning in the 21st century. A renovated library and “makerspace” provides all students with the opportunity build a foundation for exploration and creativity in ways that are truly remarkable.
Essential Skills
Southdown’s faculty and staff members recognize the importance of providing children with the essential academic, social and emotional skills to help them succeed throughout their time in Huntington and beyond.
One Big Family
A wonderful PTA that plans interesting and enjoyable family events also supports the school. Some of those events include block parties, movie nights, bingo nights, family fitness events, talent shows and so much more.
Happy and Energetic
Happy and energetic students fill Southdown’s classrooms. The school has been serving the community since 1954 and will continue to do so far into the future.

Southdown Leadership

Jill Amott-Erwig
Principal
Jill Amott-Erwig has been Southdown Primary School’s principal since August 2021. At the time of her appointment, Ms. Amott-Erwig had been serving as principal of PS 250 in Brooklyn. She was previously an assistant principal and lead teacher at PS 201 in Queens for five years.
Ms. Amott-Erwig earned undergraduate and graduate degrees at Long Island University-CW Post in 2004 and 2006, respectively. She also obtained her state administrative certification through studies at LIU-CW Post.
Southdown’s principal has worked as a third grade special education teacher, fifth grade general education teacher and K-5 elementary science teacher all at PS 305 in Brooklyn. She was a summer program supervisor and year-round recreation aide at the Town of Islip’s Sayville Community Center for 13 years.
