Southdown’s Glittering Stars of the Month

Who doesn’t like a pat of the back for a job well done? It certainly isn’t Southdown Primary School students. Just like everyone else, these youngsters enjoy being recognized for their achievements. The Stars of the Month for November have earned their moment in the spotlight.

Southdown Primary School presented awards to its top students during the month of October. It’s not easy selecting a relatively small group of youngsters in a school filled talented and hardworking students. But the latest Stars of the Month are truly just that; stars.

Southdown Primary School hosted its fourth annual Breast Cancer Walk, raising more than $2,200 for the charity Pink Aid.

Southdown Students Have Fun at Harvest Festival

Elementary grade level students all around Huntington UFSD celebrated at recent harvest festivals, which were a reminder of the community’s agricultural roots. The fun extended to the northwest corner of the district at Southdown Primary School where there was plenty of excitement to go around.

Southdown School’s Yellowbird Sculpture Stands Tall

Surrounded by flowers and plants, a large gold-plated sculpture sits serenely along the main walkway near the entrance to Southdown Primary School. It’s been there for more than 50 years, but few, if any, of the hundreds who pass it by each day have any idea of who it honors or why it’s there.

Southdown School Students Ready to Dream Big

The school year is wrapping up in fine fashion at Southdown Primary School where a final set of student award recipients was recently announced for the month of August.

Children Flourish

Southdown Primary School is a place where children flourish in an academic environment of respect, encouragement and high expectations. The faculty and staff is extraordinary; comprised of early childhood specialists who value and encourage children to explore, create and make meaning from the world around them. Learning is child-centered and tailored to the unique needs of all students.

Learning in the 21st Century

Southdown is proud of the many enhancements to its curricular program over the past several years. Every student has access to a Chromebook that is integrated throughout the school day as a means to enhance student engagement and further learning in the 21st century. A renovated library and “makerspace” provides all students with the opportunity build a foundation for exploration and creativity in ways that are truly remarkable.

Essential Skills

Southdown’s faculty and staff members recognize the importance of providing children with the essential academic, social and emotional skills to help them succeed throughout their time in Huntington and beyond.

One Big Family

A wonderful PTA that plans interesting and enjoyable family events also supports the school. Some of those events include block parties, movie nights, bingo nights, family fitness events, talent shows and so much more.

Happy and Energetic

Happy and energetic students fill Southdown’s classrooms. The school has been serving the community since 1954 and will continue to do so far into the future.

Southdown Leadership

Jill Amott-Erwig

Principal

Jill Amott-Erwig has been Southdown Primary School’s principal since August 2021. At the time of her appointment, Ms. Amott-Erwig had been serving as principal of PS 250 in Brooklyn. She was previously an assistant principal and lead teacher at PS 201 in Queens for five years.

Ms. Amott-Erwig earned undergraduate and graduate degrees at Long Island University-CW Post in 2004 and 2006, respectively. She also obtained her state administrative certification through studies at LIU-CW Post.

Southdown’s principal has worked as a third grade special education teacher, fifth grade general education teacher and K-5 elementary science teacher all at PS 305 in Brooklyn. She was a summer program supervisor and year-round recreation aide at the Town of Islip’s Sayville Community Center for 13 years.
