New College Career & Financial Management Course Approved

March 31, 2026

Huntington High School students in grades 9-12 will be offered a new course approved by Huntington School Board members at a public meeting last week. College Career & Financial Management is a new one semester course that is expected to draw an annual registration of 150 students.

“This course is a half-year elective designed to provide students with the capabilities of making sound financial decisions in the working world,” Assistant Superintendent Brenden Cusack said. “Students will experience real-world scenarios and use strategies to evaluate the costs and benefits of their financial decisions. Topics include securing employment, calculating payments, checks, wages and income, meal planning and saving money, budgeting, medical insurance, automobile insurance, interest, investing, buying a car, buying a house and maintaining a home. The class will consist of individual student research as well as collaborative projects and presentations. College credit will be offered through Stony Brook University’s ACE program.”

The district’s Subject Matter Council approved creation of the course on January 12 and the Educational Development Committee provided its approval on February 5. The course will be implemented for the 2026/27 school year.

“Offering dual enrollment through Stony Brook’s ACE program aligns seamlessly with the Career and Financial Management course as the course curriculum mirrors much of Stony Brook University’s BUS 230 Personal Finance course,” Mr. Cusack told trustees. “This half-year course provides students with the opportunity to obtain 3 college credits at the reduced rate of $300. Students who qualify for free or reduced lunch are eligible to receive these three college credits at a further reduced rate of $100.”

No new materials are needed to implement the course. Representatives from the ACE program will meet with Huntington High School faculty for planning purposes. No cost will be incurred for this articulation session.
