Scholarships Available to Reduce College Costs

Deadlines are approaching for numerous scholarship opportunities for Huntington High School seniors. The scholarships are all listed in the March Scholarship Guide. A sampling of some of the best ones are listed below. There are hot links that seniors can click on to bring them directly to the scholarship application.

Huntington High School Class of 2026 members are strongly encouraged to apply for as many of these scholarships as possible.

The Dante Foundation of Nassau County will award several $10,000 scholarships to seniors of Italian American ancestry who live in Nassau or Suffolk County. Students who have achieved academic success, participated in extracurricular activities and scored above average on the SAT/ACT exam are encouraged to apply. Each high school may submit four applications for consideration. Interested students can click here for more information and must submit completed applications to Ms. Bonilla in Guidance West by end of school day or email to scholarships@hufsd.edu. The deadline is March 13.

Gerald J. Buckenmayer FASNY Volunteer Scholarships offers twenty-five $1,500 scholarships to young volunteer firefighters who plan to continue their post-secondary education. Interested students should visit https://fasny.com/awards/scholarship/ for more information. The deadline is March 15.

The Greenlawn Fire Department awards three scholarships of $1,000 to graduating seniors who live within the Greenlawn Fire District and have “given something back” to their school. Applications are available here and are due to Ms. Diana Bonilla in Guidance West. The deadline is April 9.

The Hagan Scholarship is a nationwide need-based merit scholarship, providing recipients with the opportunity to achieve their goals and graduate college debt-free. The scholarship provides $2,000 to help pay for essential items to attend college and up to $7,500 each semester for up to 8 consecutive semesters. Hagan Scholars have attended 637 colleges and universities located in 49 states and the District of Columbia and have studied abroad in 58 countries. The Honorable Peter Fox Cohalan Scholarship in American History is awarded to a graduating Suffolk County high school senior who will pursue an undergraduate degree with a concentrated study of a minimum of 24 credit hours in American History and/or American Government. The scholarship award is $10,000 per year for up to four years of degree completion. Only 3 students per high school can apply. The Huntington Lions Club will award a $5,000 scholarship, payable in installments. The award will be based on financial need, service to the community and school, academic accomplishments, and acceptance to an accredited academic institution. A copy of the Financial Aid Form, SAT scores, and a letter of recommendation must be included. Applications are available here and are due to Ms. Diana Bonilla in Guidance West. The deadline is April 30.

New York Schools Insurance Reciprocal (NYSIR) announces the following scholarships that will award winners up to $5,000:

The Bambino Scholarship is available to a special education student who is college bound. The goal of this scholarship is to reward a student who has worked through his/her special challenges to complete high school and gain acceptance into a college or university.

The Goncalves Scholarship is available to a student who demonstrates an involvement and work for a cause or organization that promotes social justice, equal opportunity, relief of human suffering; or other aspiration generally understood to be within the meaning of humanitarian activity throughout his/her high school career.

The Jensen Scholarship is available to a student who has excelled in design in his or her high school career. The goal of this scholarship is to reward a student who has shown interest and promise in design and who wishes to pursue this path in college.
