Jose Chabla Leon’s Collage Portrait is Stunning

March 3, 2026

Jose Chabla Leon is an artist; and a very good one at that. He’s been working under the tutelage of veteran faculty member Jenna Merget in a Studio in Art class and his creativity and skills have improved by the day.

“Since day one he has been a hardworking and dedicated art student,” Mrs. Merget said. “Jose Chabla Leon is a junior who is passionate about art. The goal of this project was to create a collage portrait and focus on color matching and several of the elements and principles of art. While working from a photo reference, Jose’s work outshines the actual photo. He created realistic shadows and the exact form within his artwork by overlapping over 100 tiny magazine pieces together. He was inspired to create the pop culture icon ‘Mr. Beast.’ He chose him because ‘he felt like it’ but I truly believe the rich personality of the YouTuber influenced him.”

Mr. Chabla said he sometimes learns differently than others and schoolwork can be challenging; but art is not one of those challenges.

“Although Jose is his biggest critic, his work is outstanding and he is a true asset to our art program,” Mrs. Merget said. “He has been featured in our district art show for the past several years.”

Mr. Chabla and Mrs. Merget have developed a wonderful relationship. Mrs. Merget holds a bachelor’s degree in fine arts education from Hofstra University and a master’s degree in studio art from Adelphi University. She brings creativity, enthusiasm, and a deep love of school spirit to her work in the Huntington UFSD.

Beyond the art room, Mrs. Merget is an active presence in the school community, co-hosting events and supporting the girls’ golf program. Known for her positive energy, she’s often found brightening the halls with a warm smile and an encouraging word for students and staff alike.
