New World Club Presents Scholarships

Huntington High School’s New World Club presented ten scholarships to graduating seniors during a ceremony in the school auditorium.
New World Club members serve as mentors for English as a new language students new to Huntington High School. “In this collaborative group, students assist other students as they become increasingly attuned to a new way of life and schooling system,” according to a club profile. “Newcomers are paired with current students who help to guide and mentor their peers.”
Science teacher Marlo Romero presented the scholarships and spoke about the important work performed by the club. The organization’s members are energetic and particularly enthusiastic about their mission.
The New World Club distributed $1,500 worth of scholarships ranging from $100 to $350 to
Mindy Najera Flores (Suffolk Community College), Daniela Garcia (Culinary Institute of Barcelona), Heileen Torres (Colgate University), Emely Herrera Rivas (Cornell University), Anthoan Mancera Guerrero (Suffolk Community College), Manuel Orellana Montano, Jesley Martinez Canales (University at Albany), Trinidad Trinidad Espinoza (Suffolk Community College), Joselyn Martinez Licona (Adelphi University) and Miguel Rosendo Sanchez (Suffol Community College).
“Together, we can support newcomers as they navigate their transition, ensuring they feel welcomed and included in our vibrant school community,” Mr. Romero said. “Moving to a new country can be a daunting experience and as a community, we strive to offer our support and guidance. A mentor is someone who provides guidance, encouragement and support aimed at developing both the competence and character of the mentee.”
