Jefferson Celebrates Reading with Thrilling PARP Close

June 3, 2026

Jefferson Primary School celebrated the finale of its Pick a Reading Partner (PARP) program in alignment with the schoolwide theme; Read Like a Champion.

“To mark the occasion, we welcomed the talented Harlem Hoopsters for an exciting, high-energy assembly that brought together literacy, teamwork, and school spirit,” Jefferson Principal Valerie Capitulo-Saide said.

Jefferson has always been a premium on teaching students strong reading skills and on making reading fun and enjoyable. Students are taught how to fall in love with the practice of reading by choosing interesting topics to read about.

“The basketball show featured two dynamic performers alongside a live DJ, creating an engaging and upbeat atmosphere from start to finish,” Ms. Capitulo-Saide said. “The basketball stars amazed students and staff with their impressive ‘hoopin’ skills, demonstrating incredible tricks, coordination, and athleticism that kept the entire audience captivated.”

What made the experience especially memorable was the interactive nature of the performance. Students and staff volunteers were invited to participate on stage, learning and practicing the “Art of Basketball” through fun, guided movements led by the performers. This hands-on element encouraged confidence, collaboration, and lots of laughter, making it a truly inclusive event for all.

“This special assembly was a perfect way to celebrate the joy of reading while reinforcing our message that, just like in sports, practice, perseverance, and teamwork lead to success,” Ms. Capitulo-Saide said. “Jefferson Primary School thanks our PTA for sponsoring this unforgettable experience and for continuing to support enriching opportunities for our students.”
