Five graduating seniors on the Huntington boys’ and girls’ varsity fencing teams were recognized with special awards at the 58th annual Senior Athletic Awards Ceremony in the high school auditorium last month.
Jeremy Allen (Coaches Awards), Kevin Dominquez (Iron Teammate) and Jeremyah Leiva (Steady Blade) were honored for their efforts with the Blue Devil boys’ squad. Danna Garcia (Most Valuable) and Ariana Zavala Nunez (Steady Blade) were recognized for their play with Huntington’s girls’ team, which reached the Section XI finals.
Blue Devils Enjoy Great Season
Huntington High School’s fencers enjoyed a great winter season. The rejuvenated team put the Blue Devils back on the proverbial map in the sport and set the stage for future success.
Coached by Michelle O’Brien, Malcolm Eugene and Lauren Blackburn and assisted by armorer Timothy O’Brien, five separate Huntington fencers earned individual recognition. The girls’ squad reached the county championship meet.
The individual honorees include:
Sabre:
Julia Goodwin, 1st team All-County, All-Long Island
Chelsea Drummings, 1st team All-County
Foil:
Olivia Lee, 2nd team All-County
Danna Garcia, Honorable Mention All-County
Epee:
Owen Stevens, 1st team All-County
Huntington is in a multi-school collaboration in the sport with neighboring Harborfields. The Blue Devils have thoroughly enjoyed having the Tornadoes in the program and the coaches look forward to many more successful years.
Plans are already being formulated for next winter. The team plans to once again hold the Alan Kuver Invitational, which was cancelled this year due to a conflict with a large AAU fencing competition that drew fencers and judges on the same date. Huntington intends to return the Kuver Invitational on January 16 to the high school gym, where it has been held for decades.
Intramurals are also planned to offer elementary school students and those at Finley Middle School an opportunity to experience the sport.
