Talented senior Matthew Ross, Jr. and sophomore Rasiere Blizzard both garnered the Steve Henry Award at last week’s annual Huntington High School football awards dinner, which drew a crowd of about 250 to the cafeteria.

Superintendent Beth McCoy, Deputy Superintendent Christopher Hender, Assistant Superintendent and Principal Rochelle C. Brown were among those in attendance.

The Steve Henry Award – formerly known as the 12th man Award is presented to the player “who through unselfish loyalty, individual leadership and the ability to overcome great adversity to play football.”

Coach Henry is a teacher and former coach of Huntington High School. “As a coach he taught all of his players to be loyal and honest,” Blue Devil head coach Ronald E. Wilson said. “Coach Henry is the most loyal person you will ever find here in Huntington. He continues to devote his time to Huntington football.”

The twin awards were presented by Huntington assistant coach Malcolm Eugene, a high school special education science teacher and a former star wide receiver at Stony Brook University where he holds several football records.

Mr. Ross, a 6’4, 270 lb. offensive and defensive lineman always gave his best whenever he stepped on the field. At 5’9, 150 lbs., Mr. Blizzard played defensive back and wide receiver.

Coach Eugene spoke eloquently about what the two players meant to Huntington and the important roles they played in the team’s seven victories and county semifinal playoff game appearance.
