Washington & Flower Hill Third Graders Pursue Shoe Project in Art
January 26, 2026
Third-grade students at Washington and Flower Hill primary schools have begun the planning process for this year’s shoe project with art teacher Nicholas Matarazzo. After reading “Kicks” by Van G. Garrett, the students learned that sneakers can be diverse and unique, reflecting their individual personalities.
Equipped with Chromebooks, the students are researching color ideas for their shoe designs. “It’s inspiring to observe their interests come to life in their sketches, featuring elements like country flags, sports teams, and favorite cartoons,” Mr. Matarazzo said. “These designs spark meaningful conversations.”
Once the sketches are complete, the students will construct their shoes using recycled cardboard, paper, and CelluClay, an instant paper mache.
“This is one of my favorite projects that we do throughout the year,” Mr. Matarazzo said. “Each year we’re evolving and making it better and better so I’m really looking forward to the results this year.”
A Huntington High School graduate, Mr. Matarazzo holds degrees from Farmingdale State College and CUNY Queens College. He has a Master of Education degree in design and applied arts.
One of the highlights of Mr. Matarazzo’s time at Huntington High School was his participation in Natural Helpers with faculty advisor Robert Gilmor. “I was in the program for three years and I wish I was in it for four,” he said. “It has played a huge part in my life.” He enjoyed meeting new people, who eventually became like a second family. I love the aspect of listening to people and talking to them about problems they may be dealing with. It was a privilege to be in it and be able to meet the amazing people in it and the amazing ones who run it.”
