Amy Cabelo Appointed Huntington High School Assistant Principal

The Huntington School Board has appointed Dr. Amy S. Cabelo as an assistant principal at Huntington School, effective February 24. She will replace Patricia Avelli who was previously appointed to a position in the district office.

Dr. Cabelo comes to Huntington from the Marion County Public Schools in Florida where she has been working as a coordinator of multilingual education and family engagement and assistant principal of curriculum. She developed school-wide initiatives that increased the graduation rate by 16 percentage points by implementing targeted intervention programs.

In her current position, which she has held since May 2017, Dr. Cabelo managed Title I and Title III graduate, developed and led faculty training programs, established strategic partnerships between early learning programs and secondary students to enhance literacy and mentoring programs, strengthened family engagement by organizing events and promoted multilingual learning opportunities.

Dr. Cabelo previously worked as a for four years as a second literacy coach and reading/English teacher in the Hillsborough Public Schools. She spent one year teaching special education in the Long Beach Unified School District and taught special education-reading and language arts in the Hillsborough Public Schools from October 2004 to August 2011.

Dr. Cabelo obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in business management from the University of Phoenix; a Master of Science in educational leadership from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and a Doctor of Education from National Louis University in Chicago. Her research focus was on program evaluation of reading programs and professional learning in reading strategies.
