Woodhull Fifth Graders are Learners Who LEAD

February 11, 2026

Woodhull Intermediate School fifth graders in the Learners Who LEAD program recently participated in service learning trips to primary schools in Huntington UFSD. It was an exciting, meaningful experience that empowered students to lead, teach and serve their school community.

During the respective trips, the fifth graders proudly shared their knowledge and creativity while guiding our primary students through a variety of engaging projects.

One group of projects focused on kindness and community service. Flower Hill Primary School second graders collaborated with the Woodhull fifth graders to create bracelets that were donated to Huntington Hospital and the Town of Huntington Animal Shelter, spreading messages of care and compassion to both people and animals in need.

“Environmental awareness was another major focus of the trip,” teacher Nicole Leggio said. “Fifth graders helped younger students at Jefferson and Southdown make bird feeders and upcycled bird mosaics, teaching them about the importance of protecting birds and caring for the environment.”

Fifth graders read to third graders at Washington Primary School about topics such as the environment, endangered animals and kindness. “These read-aloud sessions encouraged learning, empathy and strong connections between grade levels,” Ms. Leggio said.

Woodhull Principal Stephanie Campbell said the Learners Who LEAD’ program is a dynamic curriculum designed to inspire and empower students to make a positive impact in the community and the world.

“The recent Learners Who LEAD trip highlighted the leadership, creativity and responsibility of the fifth grade students, while inspiring younger learners through teamwork, service and learning together,” Ms. Leggio said.
