H-ton Observes National School Counseling Week
February 4, 2026
Huntington UFSD is among school districts across the country celebrating National School Counseling Week 2026. Sponsored by the American School Counselor Association, this year’s theme, “School Counselors Amplify Student Success,” highlights how school counselors elevate outcomes for all students through advocacy, guidance, and collaboration.
Sponsored by the American School Counselor Association, the week will highlight the significant impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career.
The special week honoring school counselors provides recognition for school counselors who implement comprehensive school counseling programs, a vital part of the educational process for all students as they meet the challenges of the 21st century.
Across the district, school counselors work closely with students, families, teachers, and administrators to support academic progress, social-emotional development, and future planning. Their work helps ensure that students are supported not only in moments of challenge, but also as they explore opportunities and set goals for their futures.
“School counselors amplify student success by advocating for equity, supporting the whole child, and helping students navigate both challenges and opportunities,” said Dr. Ricky Papandrea, director of school counseling and testing, K–12. “Their work is essential to creating supportive learning environments where students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.”
From elementary through high school, Huntington UFSD counselors provide developmentally appropriate supports that include academic advising, social-emotional learning, crisis response, and college and career planning. They also play a critical role in removing barriers to learning and ensuring students have access to the resources and opportunities they need.
Huntington UFSD’s corps of school counselors includes: Primary/Intermediate Schools: Michelle Handschu; J. Taylor Finley Middle School: Lissanny Batista, Alison Logan, Paloma Ramlogan; Huntington High School: Dr. Daphne Ali, Ivy Alvayero, Diana Bonilla, Lauren Brunoni, Ruth Escobar, Evelyn Hernandez, Daniela Spillane, Bernadette Walsh
“Our school counselors are essential partners in helping students find their voice, set goals, and believe in what’s possible,” Dr. Papandrea added. “The dedication, care, and professionalism they bring to their work each day has a lasting impact on students and families.”
Huntington UFSD encourages staff, students, and families to take time during National School Counseling Week to thank and recognize school counselors for their commitment and service. Their efforts continue to strengthen the district’s mission of supporting the whole child and preparing students for success beyond the classroom.
School counselors are certified, experienced educators with a master’s degree in school counseling. The combination of their training and experience makes them an essential part of the total educational program.
