HHS Environmental Club Celebrates Earth Day
April 27, 2026
Huntington High School’s Environmental Club sprang to life for an Earth Day related event. Students decorated their own reusable tote bags in celebration of the special day. There was paint, patches, fabric scraps, buttons, and “Shirley Temples” for refreshments.
“Throughout the week the Blue Devil Broadcast showcased some of our members with Earth Day facts and tips each day,” said Anna Jao, a Huntington High School science teacher and the club’s faculty advisor.
On the Earth Day Broadcast, Ana Colman Britez had a segment. She asked provocative rhetorical questions and provided information that what difficult to wrestle with.
Ms. Colman’s segment went like this: “Did you know that approximately four trillion plastic bags get thrown away annually? Plastic bags severely impact the environment by polluting ecosystems, harming wildlife, and contributing to climate change. They take hundreds of years to break down and release toxic chemicals into soil and water. The simple act of using reusable bags helps our environment reduce pollution. Let’s see where Huntington students and teachers stand in helping to reduce our pollution.”
The first Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970 when about 20 million people across the United States participated in environmental teach-ins and related activities. It is estimated that this year, more than a billion people in nearly 200 countries celebrated Earth Day in their respective communities by doing their part to help save the increasingly fragile environment.
