Trustees Approve Computer Science Technology 7 Course

April 16, 2026

Huntington School Board members have approved a new Computer Science/Technology 7 course for J. Taylor Finley Middle School students. The course will be implemented in the 2026/27 school year.

The district’s Subject Matter Council approved the new course proposal on January 27 followed by the Educational Development Committee on February 5.

Annual enrollment in the one semester course is estimated at 325 students. The cost for curriculum writing is expected to run about $1,000. No new staff is required to implement the course.

Assistant Superintendent Brenden Cusack presented the new course proposal to the Huntington School Board members, including the course description and the rationale behind establishing the new course. Mr. Cusack answer several questions posed by trustees.

Course Description: The current Technology 7 course will be revised and renamed to incorporate the Computer Science and Digital Fluency Standards for grades 7 and 8. Computer Science 7 will be replaced with this course.

Rationale: The reframing of computer science standards within the Technology 7 Course will streamline the implementation of computer science and digital fluency instruction and provide students with opportunities to explore other elective opportunities.

“Curriculum alignment is needed to incorporate the Computer Science and Digital Fluency Standards into the course and to align Technology 8 with the revised coursework,” Mr. Cusack told trustees. “No new texts or materials are needed.”
