Huntington UFSD Celebrates Constitution Day 2026

The US Department of Education has established September 17 as Constitution Day and Citizenship Day (Constitution Day) and Huntington UFSD has established special activities in its buildings. This day commemorates the September 17, 1787 signing of the United States Constitution.

“Each educational institution that receives Federal funds for a fiscal year is required to hold an educational program about the U.S. Constitution for its students on September 17 (if it falls on a weekend; it should be held in the previous or next week),” according to the US Dept. of Education.

Activities include:

• From kindergarten through Grade 3 students at Jefferson Primary School will develop an understanding of rules, laws, citizenship, rights, responsibilities, and government. Students will progress from learning why rules promote health and safety, to understanding good citizenship and individual responsibilities, participating in decision-making through voting, and exploring the structure and function of government, as well as important holidays, celebrations, and symbols. K-3 teachers will select lessons from the district resource on Constitution Day. Teachers will choose one video, one reading and one writing activity.

• Washington Primary School will feature a Virtual assembly on the US Constitution. Students will create a writing piece as a reflection/task related to the virtual assembly. Student work will be displayed throughout the building.

• Flower Hill Primary School teachers were sent resources to use for Constitution Day. Kindergarten and first grade students will learn about What Constitution Day is and how they could be a good citizen. Second and third graders also learned about the importance of Constitution Day and about “Laws/Rights/and Responsibilities.”

• Students at Southdown Primary School will collaborate with their classmates and teachers to write a classroom constitution for the 2026/27 school year. This will include expectations for the year. Students will dive deeper into what the Constitution is and write about what makes a good citizen and how they will strive to be the best citizen they can be by setting goals for themselves this school year.

• Jack Abrams Intermediate School teachers will receive instructional resources in the building’s weekly newsletter to cover Constitution Day in class. There will be a choice board activity provided for students that will guide them to learn about the Constitution.

• Woodhull Intermediate School teachers will receive instructional resources and activities to help students learn about the Constitution, including its history, purpose, and significance.

• For J. Taylor Finley Middle School social studies teachers, Constitution Day essential questions posed to all classes will include: “What is a constitution and what is so unique and long lasting about ours?”

• For Huntington High School social studies teachers, Constitution Day essential questions posed to all classes will include: “What is a constitution and what is so unique and long lasting about ours?”
