Celebrating Growth, Achievement, and Bilingualism at Jack Abrams

October 26, 2026

Students at Jack Abrams Intermediate School were honored Tuesday during a special celebration recognizing their incredible progress on the NYSESLAT. Students who increased their English language proficiency by at least one level, as well as those who achieved commanding status, were recognized for their hard work, growth, and dedication.

Families joined us for the celebration and learned more about the NYSESLAT and the new WIDA assessment that will begin this year to help determine students’ English language proficiency levels. Students who moved up at least one level received a certificate of achievement. Students who achieved Commanding status received a certificate and were also presented with a sash and an American flag pin, symbolizing their achievement and the hard work they put into developing proficiency in a new language.

We are especially proud of our students who are developing and strengthening their bilingual skills. Being bilingual is an incredible asset that students can carry with them throughout their education and into their future. Their ability to communicate in more than one language opens doors, builds connections, and allows them to bring their unique experiences and perspectives to the world around them.

It was a wonderful opportunity for students to celebrate their accomplishments with their families and be recognized for all of their hard work. The celebration continued later in the day with a pizza party alongside their peers!

Ms. Mercado said, “We are so proud of our students and the progress they continue to make. Their hard work, perseverance, and growing bilingual skills are something to celebrate!”
