Woodhull Fifth Grade Scientists Get to the Bone of Science Learning
October 8, 2026
Fifth grade scientists at Woodhull Intermediate School recently brought their science learning to life with an exciting hands-on investigation in Ms. Ramsaran and Ms. Johnson’s classes.
As students wrapped up their science unit, What Is a Consumer?, they put their knowledge to work during an owl pellet dissection activity. Working collaboratively, students carefully examined owl pellets to investigate what owls eat and explore how these fascinating consumers obtain the energy they need to survive.
As students uncovered bones and other evidence of an owl’s diet, they made meaningful connections to important science concepts, including consumers, food chains, and the flow of energy through an ecosystem. The investigation encouraged students to observe closely, ask questions, make connections, and use evidence to deepen their understanding.
The activity also provided an excellent opportunity for students to practice collaboration and scientific investigation while engaging in authentic, hands-on learning.
It was a memorable way to wrap up the unit and a wonderful example of how Woodhull students are encouraged to explore, investigate, and bring their learning to life!
