Washington Primary School proudly celebrates Latin and Hispanic Heritage Month
October 7, 2026
From September 15 through October 15, Washington Primary School proudly celebrates Latin and Hispanic Heritage Month by providing students with meaningful opåportunities to learn about the rich cultures, traditions, accomplishments, and contributions of Latin and Hispanic Communities.
The celebration began with the Principal’s Book of the Month, La Mariachi by Isabel Estrada. The story introduces students to Tuchi, a young girl who dreams of becoming a mariachi musician. Although she is told that mariachi musicians are only for boys, Tuchi refuses to give up on her dream. Through Tuchi’s determination and perseverance, Washington Winners learned an important lesson about the power of persistence and the importance of never giving up which is a part of our Washington Winner Pledge.
Throughout the month, students also explored the lives and accomplishments of famous Latin and Hispanic individuals featured on a school bulletin board. Students learned interesting facts about their contributions and the impact they have made in their communities and around the world. They were also introduced to a variety of popular and delicious Hispanic foods, providing an opportunity to learn about culture through food and traditions.
Washington Primary School concluded the month of September with a special Washington Way Assembly focused on the theme “Never Give Up! Students were reminded that challenges are opportunities to learn, grow, and persevere. The assembly also featured a special video presentation by Eva, a young dancer who introduced students to Bomba, a traditional Puerto Rican dance. Through her presentation, students experienced an important part of Puerto Rican culture while celebrating the joy of music, dance, and cultural expression.
At Washington Primary School, Latin and Hispanic Heritage Month is more than a celebration, it is an opportunity for Washington Winners to learn, appreciate, and celebrate the diverse cultures and contributions that make our community so special.
