Sofia VanArsdale can quickly disarm anyone with her smile. It is welcoming and puts people at ease within seconds. The Huntington High School senior intends to study psychology in the SUNY New Paltz honors program.
“The key to my success has been time management,” the teenager said. “I always prioritize my schoolwork and I make schedules for homework, due dates and to-do lists to structure my days. Even though I put school first, I make sure to take care of myself by taking mental breaks. It’s important to value personal time and schoolwork in order to accomplish everything with full mental capacity.”
Ms. VanArsdale has been impressing classmates and teachers since she enrolled at Washington Primary School. “I have enjoyed the mentorship from teachers and coaches,” she said. “The lessons I’ve learned and the care that teachers have given me is something I value because I have not only grown as a student, but as a person. It has helped me reach new levels in my academics and outlooks in life, and I’ve loved how this guidance has taught me more about myself.”
The senior has been a top varsity field hockey for three years and helped lift the Blue Devils to the playoffs twice. Ms. VanArsdale’s play with Huntington has been among the highlights of her time in high school. Serving as a team captain has been especially meaningful.
“In my outside involvement in dance, my dedication for all the years I’ve been there is such an accomplishment to me,” she said. “My consistent High Honor Roll appearances, Pride Awards, and being an AP Scholar with Distinction have been such honors to receive.
