Huntington High School Auditorium Renovations Near Completion

August 21, 2026

When plans for a new Huntington High School were developed in 1956, community sessions were held to determine what unique aspects of architecture were desired by residents. After enduring a tiny auditorium at the old high school on Main Street, the community asked for a huge space at the new building, one capable of hosting large scale concerts and performances.

New large panel video screens have been installed.

The old auditorium seated about 350, but the one at the new high school was designed to accommodate 1,848 seats, including nearly 500 in a large balcony. It’s hosted many memorable nights and events over the past 68 years since it opened in November 1958. But despite periodic updates, it was in need of an overhaul and significant renovations.

Three years ago, residents approved using $2,690,800 in capital reserve fund monies for high school auditorium renovations and improvements. Residents also voted to spend up to $425,000 to renovate two public auditorium area restrooms that are heavily used during events. All of that work is well underway without having to borrow any monies.

The work involves installation of colorful panels to improve overall sound quality, an entirely new audio system throughout the cavernous space, new lighting, new stage rigging, two huge video panels affixed to both sides of the walls along the front of the stage, installation of a video recording system and nearly 500 new blue seats in the balcony, which still had the original chairs from 1957 and which were slowly disintegrating. Visitors will also notice several other small but welcome changes.

Nationally renowned Advance Sound is handling the audio, video, lighting and rigging work. JMF is doing general renovations inside the auditorium along with the bathrooms project. McHugh Furnishing handled the balcony seating work.

“The new balcony seating has been installed,” Assistant Superintendent Dr. Rubie R. Harris said. “The two LED screens are installed. The upgraded sound system is installed with sound testing producing top-tier sound. The rigging is underway. The restrooms have been gutted and tile and ceiling work is taking place. Work is expected to be completed over the next three weeks in both areas.”

The bathrooms look spectacular, even before work is complete. The new gray and blue tile, ceiling panels and lighting are bright and refreshments. All sinks and toilets and fixtures are completely brand new.

School officials have been visiting the auditorium throughout the project and keeping tabs on its progress. Students are excited to perform in the newly renovated space.
