October 17, 2025

Several Huntington High School students were honored this week at the Town of Huntington’s 31st annual Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration.

Seniors Jesley Martinez Canales and Erika Hernandez captured $1,000 Student Achievement Award scholarships and Belinda L. Velasquez, Juanita Marquez Alvarez, Giselle Salmeron and Ashley Moreno Garcia garnered town proclamations in recognition of their personal accomplishments and positive impact on the community.

The evening included inspiring words from a variety of guest speakers along with Town Supervisor Edmund Smith, who was the master of ceremonies. There were also several uplifting dance performances.

Huntington UFSD’s central office administrators were on hand for the festivities, which included Huntington High School’s United Amigos club performing a well-received dance and three dual language program alums who are now attending J. Taylor Finley Middle School reading a series of poems.

Lucas Coby, read the poem “Bilingual” by Alma Flor Ada in English, followed by Gabriella Zielinski, reading the same poem in Spanish and Samantha Graber, concluding with the poem “Latinos, Amigos de todas partes” by Isabel Campoy.

Performers from the district impressed the crowd. “All did a wonderful job representing Huntington UFSD,” Superintendent Beth McCoy said.

Light food and refreshments were enjoyed by all once the award festivities wrapped up.
