Ms. Urena plans to attend Adelphi University and pursue studies in English literature and elementary education. The high school faculty as well as her classmates believe she’d make a great teacher.

“My key to success has been maintaining a positive mindset,” Ms. Urena said. “Whenever I received a bad grade or went through a difficult period, I wouldn’t dwell on the negative; I’d take action and remind myself that everything would work out. I’m grateful for my blessings and for having a pragmatic perspective.”

Treasurer of the high school’s Spanish Honor Society, Ms. Urena is also a member of Huntington’s National Honor Society chapter as well as the English and Social Studies Honor Societies.

“Some of the most rewarding aspects of high school have been meeting inspiring people such as my peers and administrators, having supportive teachers and exploring various electives and extracurriculars that helped me grow intellectually,” Ms. Urena said.

From winning a Pride Award for her efforts in Advanced Placement Literature and Composition and Earth Science to participating in the Columbia University Youth Engagement Committee, Ms. Urena has made the most of her high school years.

The senior has even made the time to be integrally involved in the town’s Youth Court program. Ms. Urena has also been a “blooming writer” with the high school’s Et Cetera literary magazine.

As she prepares to begin a new stage of her life at Adelphi University, Ms. Urena is excited and her teachers and classmates are just as excited for her. She’s the type of person who inspires confidence and she is set to win a whole new set of fans in college.
