Huntington Garners Advanced Placement Achievement Awards

July 25, 2025

Huntington High School is celebrating its Advanced Placement Capstone Diploma award recipients and AP Seminar and Research certificate honorees.

“Rather than teaching subject-specific content, these courses develop students’ skills in research, analysis, evidence-based arguments, collaboration, writing and presenting,” according to the College Board. “Students who complete the two-year program can earn one of two different AP Capstone awards, which are valued by colleges across the United States and around the world.”

AP Seminar is a foundational course in which students explore the complexities of academic and real-world issues. AP Research allows students to deeply explore an academic topic, problem, issue, or idea of individual interest.

Juniors Kiley Barch, Rachel Huth and Louisa Skrobela and seniors Nicolas Francis (SUNY College at Geneseo), Thomas Galicia-Martinez (University at Albany), Janelee Gomez-Hernandez (Johnson & Wales University), John Joyce (College of William & Mary), Maximilien Leroy (SUNY College at Geneseo), Michael Mendikyan (New York University), Mia Molina-Baptista (SUNY College at Geneseo), Natalie Parrott (New York University), Aine Rimkunas (Binghamton University), Kai Rotunno (Binghamton University), Kyra Scott (Southern Connecticut State University) and Anne Tyrrell (SUNY College at Geneseo) have all qualified for the AP Capstone Diploma.

Seniors Alejandro Orjuela (Suffolk Community College), Carlos Reyes-Sorto (Fashion Institute of Technology), Samuel Soric (Boston University) and Sophia Weiss (Utica University) captured AP Seminar and Research certificates.

The awards were announced by the district’s Chairman of Humanities Joseph Leavy. Most of the members of the group were recognized at the high school’s senior scholarships and awards night ceremony that drew a crowd of about 300 to the auditorium.

AP Capstone Diplomas are granted to students who earn scores of 3 or higher in AP Seminar and AP Research and on four additional AP exams of their choosing. AP Seminar and Research certificates are granted to students who earn scores of 3 or higher in both AP Seminar and AP Research.
