December 19, 2025

Four Huntington High School students recently participated in the Long Island National History Day Showcase at the Huntington Public Library. Veda Gross, Chelsea Drummings, Naomi Lyons and Hennie England presented their projects during the session sponsored by the Huntington Historical Society.

The Huntington High School students and their projects included:

• Hennie England: Knowledge is Power: The Right to Information in Schools (This project examined Pico vs. Island Trees, a First Amendment case on the banning of library books that reached the US Supreme Court.)

• Veda Gross and Chelsea Drummings: Freedom of Speech and Responsibility: The Anarchist Cookbook Debate

• Naomi Lyons: The Dark History of Willowbrook: Exposing Failures in Care for the Disabled

Ms. Lyons also presented her work to high school teacher Frederick Bisogno’s New York Experience class. “The students were engrossed in their classmate’s presentation through her website,” said Lauren Desiderio, a Huntington High School social studies teacher who coordinates the National History Day initiative in Huntington UFSD.

Chairperson of Social Studies Joseph Leavy and Susan Glaser, a Huntington Historical Society trustee and LI History Day Coordinator emerita spoke at the event and with Huntington Historical Society Director Stephanie Gotard. Huntington Town Council certificates were also presented to the students. Refreshments were provided by the Ketewamoke chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
