Family Engagement Night at Washington School

Family Engagement Night at Washington Primary School successfully blended fitness and mindfulness activities with the result being fun for students and their parents and siblings.
“Families at Washington Elementary came together for an exciting Family Engagement Night that combined fitness, fun and mindfulness — and it was a huge success,” Principal Dr. Michelle Richards said
The evening kicked off with “Wumba,” Washington’s version of Zumba, where families filled the gym with energy and laughter as they danced along to upbeat music led by first grade teacher Yvette Rosario. Parents and children moved together, proving that fitness can be both fun and family-friendly.
To balance the high energy of Wumba, the school also offered a quiet mindfulness room, where families could relax, stretch and take part in calming activities. “The mindfulness space provided a peaceful atmosphere where participants learned simple breathing exercises and techniques to help manage stress — both at home and in school,” Dr. Richards said.
The night also featured relay races, where families teamed up to test their coordination, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Cheers filled the gym as participants of all ages sprinted, laughed, and encouraged one another.
“It was amazing to see our students and families come together for a night of movement, mindfulness, and connection,” Dr. Richards said. “Events like these remind us that wellness is about both body and mind. With smiles, laughter, and a sense of community, Washington’s Family Engagement Night was a true celebration of health, happiness, and togetherness.”
