Finley Softball Remains Undefeated

The Finley Middle School softball team remains perfect after beating back a stiff challenge from West Hollow in a slugfest, 19-10. The young Blue Devils are 3-0 heading into another tough game this afternoon at East Northport at 5 p.m.

Against West Hollow, both squads made solid contact at the plate and displayed strong defense, but Finley’s relentless offense eventually won out.

Finley was led by standout performances across the board. Lia Rotunno continued her consistent play, going 1-for-2 with three runs scored and a run batted in. Kellen Anderson stayed hot at the plate, reaching base all four times with two hits and three RBIs.

Brianna Zavala Reyes had a tremendous game, scoring three runs, driving in another three runs and ripping one of the hardest hit balls of the season up the middle. She also played flawlessly at first base.

Behind the plate, Vader Renkewitz made a key defensive play on a bunt to stop a scoring threat and also added two RBIs and two runs scored. Gretchen Schmidt remained reliable at second base, getting on base and scoring consistently. Amiyah Herring was perfect on the base paths, scoring all three times she reached base and tallying two RBIs.

Star pitcher Amber Murtaza picked up her third win of the season, allowing just six hits while striking out seven. She also fielded her position exceptionally well, recording five putouts.

The young Blue Devils are coached by Huntington High School softball alum, Ellyn Byrnes who feels the team continues improving each week.

“The wins are a result of the hard work we put in during practice and this outcome was another true team effort with every player contributed in all three games this season,” Byrnes said.
