June 30, 2025

Julia Aldas and Jose Diaz Gamez have learned their lessons well, graduating among the most high-achieving seniors in Huntington High School’s Class of 2025. The teenagers are this year’s recipients of the Huntington Foundation for Excellence in Education’s twin $2,500 scholarships.

Huntington Foundation President Tara Poli presented the scholarship awards to Ms. Aldas and Mr. Diaz on behalf of the organization at a ceremony in the high school auditorium.

Ms. Aldas plans to study at Hofstra University for a career as a medical doctor. Mr. Diaz intends to pursue a degree in criminal justice at Farmingdale State College.

“The key to my success has always been completing my work on time, even when I didn’t fully understand it,” Ms. Aldas said. “I take advantage of extra help so I can stay on track and succeed. I make the most of extra credit opportunities, try to get involved as much as I can and always aim to be kind and respectful.”

Ms. Aldas was chosen by her classmates to serve as a Natural Helper and discretely helped others work through difficult personal and family issues. She volunteered with the New World Club, assisting newcomers to the US and the high school assimilate and get off to a good start in unfamiliar surroundings.

“To me, high school has been about learning, growing and experiencing new things; talking to new people, making new friends and connecting with amazing teachers,” Ms. Aldas said. “I’ve loved watching myself grow over these past four years surrounding by great people.”

Ms. Aldas and Mr. Diaz were both honored as Distinguished Seniors in recognition of their strong academic performance.

“The key to my success has been waking up early every morning, being on time for school every day, finishing my homework on time and simply having a smile no matter what,” Mr. Diaz said.

The teenager works part time fixing cars after engaging in car technician studies at Wilson Tech. “One of the aspects I have enjoyed most about my high school career are the teachers who have been incredibly supportive. Whenever I have a question, they are happy to help. I also appreciate how my guidance counselor, Ms. [Evelyn] Hernandez has helped accommodate my schedule in a way that made me feel comfortable.”
