Summer Reading Fun for Finley Students

June 27, 2025

Reading can bring about both fun and joy. Many J. Taylor Finley Middle School students already know this simple truth. Huntington UFSD hopes it will be an accepted fact this summer as teachers and administrators are encouraging everyone at Finley to read as often as possible throughout July and August.

“This summer will provide time for your child to enjoy the pleasures of reading and we are happy to present several opportunities for this endeavor,” wrote Assistant Superintendent Brenden Cusack in a letter to parents. “Spending time reading will give your child structure during the day and will maintain reading as a priority as we transition to the new school year.”

Students entering seventh or eighth grade have three choices available at the links below. Students can participate in one, two or all three of these opportunities.

Opportunity No 1: Finley Middle School Summer Reading Game Board: Students read, analyze, retell and re-imagine a folk tale or legend from among our diverse heritages; Use this link to enter the game board and enjoy reading wisdom from among many cultural traditions: https://oliver6thgradeskills.my.canva.site/summer-reading-gameboard

Students completing this summer reading Game Board challenge are invited to respond in writing and this summer work will enable them to receive up to three points added to their first quarter English grade in the fall. Students can elect to write this reaction for credit or their reading can be for pure enjoyment with no written requirement.

Opportunity No. 2: Huntington Public Library’s Summer Color Our World Reading program. Students will need a library card to access books at the public library. These cards are available at the village or station branch of the public library. The information about the Color Our World Reading program can be found here: https://myhpl.org/ Look under > “Programs” > Registration is required.

Opportunity No 3: Huntington Public Library’s “Battle of the Books” Information on registration can be found here https://myhpl.libnet.info/event/13397620

“We are very happy to be working alongside our public library which offers so many services to our community,” Mr. Cusack said.
