June 25, 2025
Alison Capewell is great at what she does. The J. Taylor Finley Middle School English teacher garnered the New York State Senate “Educators Inspiring a Generation” Award for her “profound impact, not only in the classroom but also across the Huntington school community.”
“Her passion for English language arts is evident in the dynamic, engaging, and student-centered instruction she delivers to a wide variety of students including our English language learners as well as our Advanced Placement students,” Assistant Superintendent Brenden Cusack said. “However, what truly sets her apart is the fact that Alison’s influence extends far beyond her classroom.”
Nominees for the award must display: Excellence in teaching and student engagement; Use of innovative teaching practices or new approaches that have improved student learning; Leadership in creating and supporting a positive school culture; Active involvement in school or district-wide programs and initiatives; Meaningful contributions to the professional growth and development of colleagues.
“Ali Capewell was nominated because she truly embodies all of these qualities and more,” Mr. Cusack said. “She goes above and beyond every day and always does so with a smile.”
Mr. Cusack presented the award to Ms. Capewell at the Finley PTA’s annual luncheon. The educator received a standing ovation from the crowd.
Known to all as Ali, Ms. Capewell is a veteran educator, dual certified in English language arts and English as a new language. She has dedicated the past nine years to teaching both middle and high school students in Huntington UFSD.
Ms. Capewell serves as an ELA instructional coach, playing a critical role in elevating instructional practices among her colleagues. “Her commitment to professional learning and collaborative growth fosters a culture of continuous improvement and innovation in teaching and learning,” Mr. Cusack said.
The veteran educator is also the lead teacher on the Positive Behavior Intervention Strategies team; the advisor for Finley Middle School’s “No Place for Hate” initiatives, and an apprentice in Huntington UFSD’s Quality Teaching for English Learners program, where she shares best practices with colleagues. She’s also the lead teacher on both the School Improvement Team and the Action Team.
“Somehow, she also finds time to work with Finley Middle School’s Student Ambassadors,” Mr. Cusack said. “In all of these roles, she is an instrumental force in shaping a positive, inclusive, welcoming and academically focused school environment. Her leadership, insight, and dedication have helped to drive initiatives that enhance student outcomes and staff morale alike. As I work with teachers, administrators and students across our district, I am confident that if there is a club, committee or initiative that works toward continuous enhancements for the children of this district, I will very likely find that Ali is a key member of the group.”
Ms. Capewell has developed into one of the cornerstones of the school community. “The name of this award, ‘Educators Inspiring a Generation’ quite perfectly describes this talented and hardworking individual,” Mr. Cusack said. “She truly is inspiring. Her unwavering support for administration, colleagues and students from all walks of life; her commitment to fostering a positive school culture and her steadfast pursuit of excellence in instructional practice make her an exemplary candidate for this honor.”
