Summer Reading for Huntington UFSD Elementary Students

June 25, 2025

Developing a love for reading is known to open many doors and set the stage for success in school and a lifetime of many happy and enjoyable days. Huntington UFSD has organized a summer reading program for elementary school children and officials are encouraging parents to encourage every youngster to participate.

“An essential element of school success is the encouragement of reading, both for pleasure and interest,” Assistant Superintendent Brenden Cusack said. “Summer vacation is a beautiful time to explore new books with your child. Sharing a great story fosters rich conversation, enhances vocabulary, and provides a warm bonding experience. Reading for just 15 minutes each day will help your child sustain the growth they achieved this past school year.”

Students and parents are invited to complete a summer reading log. “The purpose of the reading log is to chart the title and author of the books read and the completion date of each book,” Mr. Cusack explained. “When school begins in the fall, your child should return the log to their new classroom teacher. The log can be found on the Huntington UFSD website and the district summer reading site.”

To locate the site, students will log onto their Chromebook and then enter this address:

The Huntington UFSD summer reading Google site provides resources for summer reading book selections. The site will house all summer reading resources, including the reading log, reading response forms and book lists with suggested titles.

“As always, we are supporting the New York State library theme,” Mr. Cusack said. “This year’s theme, ‘Color Our World,’ centers on books related to the arts and creativity. In keeping with the theme, children are able to read both fiction and non-fiction books or titles of their own selection. Your child may register online through the public library now.”

Children may begin reporting on books they read at the public library on Tuesday, July 1. The last day to report on books at Huntington libraries is Wednesday, August 20.

The library has a collection of eBooks that can be accessed for summer reading. You can also check out books and collect them from the library via curbside pickup. Please visit the Huntington Public Library website at https://myhpl.org/ or send questions to children@huntlib.org.

Huntington UFSD also has a partnership with Scholastic Literacy Pro. “Students can read these eBooks at any time and from any location with an active internet connection,” Mr. Cusack said. “To learn how to access your child’s digital reading options, they must log in to their Clever account. Children will use their regular school username and password to log in. We hope this is an enjoyable summer filled with books and stories!”
