In his first trip ever to the state championships, Huntington sophomore Eric Heinz displayed incredible athleticism and came away with a fifth place bronze medal after a splendid performance in the pentathlon.
Heinz’ exploits played out at Middletown High School, which hosted this year’s state track and field championships. The pentathlon consists of five separate events: 110m hurdles, long jump, shot put, high jump and 1500m run.
The ancient pentathlon from the earliest Olympics included running, jumping, javelin, discus and wrestling. It is often said to be an indication of the best all-around athletes.
Heinz won the 1500m run, besting the field of 42 in a time of 4:21.91. He was tenth in long jump and 18th in 110m hurdles. The teenager was 25th in high jump and 26th in shot put. He took fifth in the final overall standings and earned All-State honors and a place on the victory stand.
“Eric Heinz has become one of the most entertaining competitors in Suffolk County,” Huntington head coach Ronald E. Wilson said. “Everyone knows him and enjoys the energy he brings to every competition. He’s friendly and has this awesome smile whether he wins or loses. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him angry or upset. He’s very strategic and calculating in his planning of races and events. By the end of his fourth event, he knew exactly what needed to be done to earn a medal and get on that podium. He did exactly that! He broke his own school record by four points.”
