Woodhull Fifth Graders Are Learners Who Lead

June 10, 2025

Fifth graders participating in Woodhull Intermediate School’s Learners Who LEAD program recently took part in a meaningful community service trip to Huntington UFSD’s primary schools to lead and inspire younger students.

As part of their action plans, students visited third graders at Washington, Jefferson and Southdown to complete a variety of hands-on service projects. Others spent time reading to kindergarteners at Flower Hill, fostering a love of reading among Huntington’s youngest learners.

Service projects included:

• Making homemade dog treats and no-sew fleece blankets for the Huntington Animal Shelter

• Creating colorful bracelets for patients and staff at Huntington Hospital

• Designing suncatchers for members of the Huntington Senior Center

• Teaching primary students about recycling and completing an upcycling craft together

• Reading to kindergarten students

These experiences reinforced the core goals of the Learners Who LEAD program by empowering students to take initiative, show empathy, and make a meaningful impact in the community. The trips also provided our students with the opportunity to share their knowledge about service and inspire younger students through their leadership and example.

“It was inspiring to see our fifth graders take on the role of teachers and helpers,” said teacher Nicole Leggio, who heads the Learners Who Lead program. “They truly stepped up, fostered a sense of empathy and made a difference in the lives of younger students.”
