Senior Elizabeth James Chooses Hofstra University

June 9, 2025

Elizabeth James is one of the top track and field athletes in the state, but her classmates know her simply as a kind-hearted and considerate soul that cares about everyone. The Huntington High School senior plans to study nursing at Hofstra University and compete on the school’s NCAA Division I track team.

Huntington senior Elizabeth James is headed to Hofstra University.

“Hofstra University aligns perfectly with my aspirations, offering a unique blend of opportunities essential for my future,” Ms. James said. “Selecting a university was a challenging decision, as I weighed the prospect of continuing my athletic pursuits against the imperative of focusing on my nursing career. Hofstra provides an ideal platform to continue participating in track and field while concurrently enrolling in a distinguished nursing program that promises excellent career prospects upon graduation. My intention is to complete my nursing degree and subsequently pursue certification in nurse anesthesiology.”

An All-State track athlete, Ms. James also participated in varsity gymnastics and was routinely recognized as a New York State Scholar Athlete.

“As a student-athlete at Huntington, I have been deeply involved in various extracurricular activities,” Ms. James said. “I serve as the vice president of my class, vice president of the General Organization and vice president of the National Honor Society. I am also a member of our county-winning mock trial team, an experience that has equipped me with invaluable skills that will serve me throughout my life. Beyond academics, I am a two sport varsity athlete. My participation in Huntington’s varsity track team since the seventh grade has been an indispensable outlet for personal growth and development.”

Ms. James said she has been “profoundly influenced” by high school mathematics teacher Amanda Scott, who has mentored the teenager. “I have had the privilege of being her student and, this year, her intern in Advanced Algebra,” the senior said. “Mrs. Scott has consistently supported me from my sophomore year through my senior year. Her exceptional guidance and the experiences I have gained as her intern have been invaluable.”

The teenager was recognized at this spring’s Distinguished Seniors dinner in the high school gym. The affair brought together seniors who had attained an average of 90 or better during every semester of high school.

My success throughout high school has come from truly trusting in the Lord’s timing while avoiding complacency,” Ms. James said. “I’ve learned that faith isn’t just about waiting; it’s about actively putting in my best effort in everything I do. That balance between faith and action has guided me through high school and helped me live a life of purpose and accomplishment.”

Ms. James has excelled in track in short distance races, triple jump and relays and in gymnastics in every event. Her performances of “The Star Spangled Banner” prior to athletic events have energized both the crowd and the athletes themselves.

“I eagerly anticipate commencing my studies at Hofstra,” Ms. James said. “However, the memories and experiences I have accumulated at Huntington will forever hold a cherished place in my heart. Having witnessed my three elder siblings graduate from Huntington, and now experiencing my own graduation, I am struck by the profound realization of how fortunate I have been to grow up in this environment. The friendships and bonds I have forged here are treasures that I will always value.”
