STEM House System Competition in Full Swing

December 11, 2025

Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School’s House system is a schoolwide character trait based recognition program that adds in a bit of competition.  Each month one class in each grade level presents a character trait.

For the month of January, the trait is “acceptance.”  Jack Abrams School students get creative with their presentations. “Sometimes students act out skits, or do song parodies changing the lyrics to a popular song,” Principal Donna Moro explained. “Then during the month, students receive points for demonstrating the character trait.”

At the end of the month teachers nominate House Heroes and those Heroes get to spin a wheel to earn even more points. At the end of the year, the House with the most points win the House Trophy and a parade.

Currently, House Reveur is in the lead earning more than 90,000 points “but each month house points change quickly,” Ms. Moro said. “Who will be this year’s winner?!  Stay tuned!”

Why a House System? Ms. Moro pointed to several reasons:

• Setting universal expectations for all students

• Positive reinforcement

• Creating a culture of belonging

• Encourages character building

• Setting norms for healthy competition
