Southdown Hosts Family Engagement Cultural Night
December 1, 2025
Southdown Primary School recently hosted a vibrant and heartwarming Family Engagement Cultural Night and it proved to be a celebration to remember. Students and families filled the gym with excitement as they explored countries from around the world, visiting beautifully decorated tables and collecting passport stamps along the way.
“Each family who volunteered went above and beyond,” Principal Jill Amott-Erwig said. “They created stunning posters, brought meaningful artifacts, traditional clothing, and cherished items from their cultures, transforming the space into a global showcase. Parents generously shared recipes, photos, stories, and personal traditions, giving our students an authentic glimpse into the rich diversity of our school community.”
Southdown students were fully engaged as they asked questions, compared similarities and differences, and proudly shared pieces of their own cultural identities. “The joy on their faces as they traveled ‘from country to country’ reminded us of how powerful it is to learn from one another,” Ms. Amott-Erwig said.
Southdown is similar to the other seven schools in Huntington UFSD. It consists of an amazing array of nationalities, cultural traditions, creeds, races and personalities. The youngsters all come together in classrooms, hallways and playgrounds as Americans and proud ones at that.
“We look forward to continuing to celebrate the diversity that makes our school community so special.
