Finley Softball Tops Northport to Keep Rolling
April 30, 2025
The J. Taylor Finley Middle School softball team made it two straight victories with an exciting win over Northport, 12-3. The squad is coached by Blue Devil softball alum Ellyn Byrnes.

Leading the charge against Northport was Amber Murtaza, who turned in another spectacular performance on the mound. The budding pitching star hurled another complete game victory, striking out 12 batters and surrendering just three runs. “But she didn’t stop there,” Byrnes said.
“In a jaw-dropping moment, Amber also launched a grand slam during an explosive eight-run second inning, giving us a lead that proved to be insurmountable.
Finley’s bats were blazing across the lineup. Lia Rotunno continued her hot streak at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and two runs batted in. Kellen Anderson was just as sharp, also going 2-for-3 and driving in two runs. Katie Van Horn was a perfect 2-for-2, crossing the plate twice and adding an RBI of her own. Lindsey Campos Saravia chipped in with a strong 1-for-2 outing, scoring twice and collecting two RBIs, adding more fuel to Finley’s offensive fire.
“But it wasn’t just the offense that shined,” Byrnes said. “Finley’s defense was rock-solid, playing error-free ball.”
First baseman Brianna Zavala Reyes made several smooth scoops to keep runners off base, while Samantha Salerno and Kellen Anderson locked down third base with flawless fielding. Gretchen Schmidt and Annie Donovan held their ground at second, making key plays that helped limit Northport’s scoring chances. Behind the plate, Vader Renkewitz delivered another spotless performance, anchoring the defense with poise.
“From top to bottom, every player contributed, whether at the plate or in the field,” Byrnes said. “It was a complete team effort, and another statement win for the Finley squad.”
