Science Honor Society Holds Earth Day Cleanup

April 29, 2025

Huntington High School’s Science Honor Society chapter made this year’s Earth Day special by fanning out and picking up debris on the campus. The simple act resulted in several bags being filled to capacity and a more beautiful space being left behind.

Last week’s cleanup was held under sunny skies. Science Honor Society members made their way around school grounds, beginning near the gym before heading toward The Rock and then to the tennis court complex and finally around the parking lot. Multiple bags of garbage were picked up in just one period.

Huntington’s 2024/25 Science Honor Society chapter is led by Nicholas Plachta (president), Anthony Addeo (vice president), Emily Kustera (recording secretary), Dylan Heller (recording secretary), Rachel Huth (treasurer) and Amalia Heinz (tutoring coordinator). Teachers Danielle Raguzin and Luigi Papasidero are the organization’s faculty advisors.

Last week’s cleanup included society members Ada Cruz Gutierrez, Anthony Addeo, Anthony Retamal Vidal, Cameron Smith, Daniel Simon, Emma Gutierrez, Heather Herman, John Joyce, Kai Rotunno, Lauren Donaghy, Nicholas Plachta, Quinn Rinaldi, Doris Castillo Molina, Mr. Papasidero and Mrs. Raguzin.

The Science National Honor Society was organized in 2000 with the following objectives:

• To encourage and recognize scientific and intellectual thought.

• To advance students’ knowledge of classical and modern science.

• To communicate with the scientific community.

• To aid the civic community with its comprehension of science.

• To encourage students to participate in community service and in turn, encourage a dedication to the pursuit of scientific knowledge that benefits all of mankind.
