Jefferson Reaches for the Stars on Earth Day
April 28, 2025
Always a trendsetter, Jefferson Primary School students reached for the stars for Earth Day this month as youngsters from pre-kindergarten age through third grade enjoyed an “out of this world” experience in the district’s portable Starlab.
Starlab’s mission is “to empower scientific literacy by inspiring curiosity, promoting lifelong learning and fostering a deep appreciation for our universe and everything in it.”
Inside the portable planetarium, Jefferson School students explored the phases of the moon and gained a deeper understanding of how day and night occur on Earth; bringing science to life in an engaging and memorable way.
The hands-on celebration of Earth and space was made possible through the collaboration and preparation of our various staff members.
K-12 Science Chairperson Ms. Lowrie organized this student learning experience and also provided training to Jefferson teachers ahead of the event, equipping them to guide the youngsters through each session with confidence and curiosity.
“Special thanks to teachers Julie Dooher, Janese Pfeiffer and Olivia Russell for leading students through this immersive journey and sparking wonder about the world and universe around us,” Jefferson Principal Valerie Capitulo-Saide said. “Thank you for helping our youngest learners explore the universe; one constellation at a time.”
Huntington UFSD has utilized Starlab for decades. It has allowed students to study and explore “from the furthest corners of our universe to ancient civilizations and everything in between. The portable learning dome and projection system allows for stunning 360-degree learning experiences.”
