Blue Devil Co-ed Bowling Ready to Roll Again

Huntington's co-ed varsity bowling team will kickoff practice on November 14

October 17 , 2022

The Huntington High School bowling team is set for its sophomore season after stepping onto the lanes last fall for the first time in nearly 30 years.

Chris Taylor is Huntington's varsity bowling coach.

Bowling was dropped from the Blue Devil sports lineup in the early 1990s, but Superintendent James W. Polansky thought current students might have a fun time participating in the sport so with his encouragement and support from the Huntington School Board, the athletic department reintroduced the game.

Both boys and girls are eligible to play on the team. Since Huntington doesn’t have separate boys and girls teams, everyone is welcome to join the one team.

Huntington High School physical education teacher Christopher Taylor is back as the team’s head coach. The Blue Devils will be decked out in gorgeous blue polo shirts. The team’s home base is Larkfield Lanes in East Northport, which it shares with teams from Northport and Harborfields high schools.

Juniors Lily Froggatt Bale, Samantha Koepele, Jack Ruthkowski, Jack Semelsberger and Andrew Sullivan who played on last year’s team are all eligible to return. The group forms a strong nucleus entering the season.

The 2022/23 schedule has the varsity bowling team playing 16 home and away matches against Smithtown, Northport, Central Islip, Islip, Commack, Harborfields, East Islip and Hauppague. Most of the matches will be held at Larkfield Lanes since that is also the home site of Northport and Harborfields.

The team will practice and play several days of the week beginning November 14. Practices will run from 3-5 p.m. “We will work to get our scores up and have fun doing it,” Taylor said. “Everyone is welcome to give it a try.”

Athletes who want to play on the Blue Devil bowling team should sign-up in the nurse’s office now. Every student needs to get re-qualified by the school nurse prior to each sport season. The nurse can only clear a student-athlete who has the following forms on file:

• Private Physical Exam Form (link below)
NYS Private Physical Examination Form for Athletes

• Interval Health History Form (link below)
Interval Health History for Sports Participation (English/Spanish)

All Blue Devil sports student-athletes are also required to submit a blue parent permission form to their coach no later than the first day of tryouts/practice.

The form can be found at this link:

Taylor has been talking up the sport in the high school gym to build interest. Any student in grades 9-12 is eligible. Interested? Seek out Taylor during the school day or send him a message at
