As a member district of Western Suffolk BOCES, Huntington offers students an opportunity to enroll in courses at Lewis A. Wilson Technological Center, which provides career and technical education programs designed to prepare students as both skilled and semi-skilled workers and technicians in various occupational areas. Programs include graphics and media and the construction, health, service, technical and transportation industries. Two year programs begin in a student’s junior year. Four credits can be earned for each year of attendance.
Courses are offered at sites in Dix Hills, Northport, Farmingdale and Deer Park. Daily transportation is provided from Huntington High School for either a morning or afternoon half-day program. Wilson Tech offers job placement assistance by working closely with industry and trade unions. Huntington students can also apply to two-year and four-year colleges or obtain detailed information about further occupational specialty training through the high school College Counseling Center. For more information see a high school guidance counselor.
Huntington students can also participate in the Career Internship Program, which is designed to provide juniors and seniors with opportunities for enrichment activities that go beyond the usual academic experience. Students are required to work daily with their mentors and keep a detailed journal. The experience concludes with a presentation to a committee of parents, teachers and classmates about the internship.
Students, who choose a field and pitch a proposal, earn one academic credit for their participation in the pass/fail course. The goal is for students to gain real life experience in careers that they would like to explore in college and as an occupation. The program provides real life, hands-on experience.
Internship possibilities are virtually unlimited and include work at law firms, medical offices, hospitals, apprenticeships with craftsmen, environmental research, TV, radio or newspaper production, lab research, musical composition and artistic presentations, to name a few. For more information on how to participate in next year’s program call Camille DeCanio (673-2073).
