Senior Matt Giamo kept his composure through a long and made all the big shots as the Huntington High School senior captured the individual Suffolk League II golf tile at Rock Hill Golf & Country Club in Manorville.
Giamo shot a two over par 73 to best the talented field and qualify for next week’s county championships, also to be played at Rock Hill.
“The course was playing pretty easy,” said Giamo after returning to the clubhouse. “I hit the ball well, but I really struggled with my putting and left a lot of strokes out there.”
“Matt played a brilliant round,” said Michael Marinello, Huntington’s head coach. The Blue Devils finished fourth in the team standings.

Senior Tyler Gerbavsits also qualified for next week’s Suffolk finals, shooting a nine over par 80 at Rock Hill. It’s far above the teenager’s average score, but he played well enough to advance and keep his hope of reaching the state championships alive. Gerbavsits played in the state finals as a sophomore.
Giamo and Gerbavsits are now prepping for the county championships. The two day competition is typically grueling. The two Blue Devils will play on Tuesday. Whoever makes the cut after the first day will play again on Thursday.
The top nine finishers in next Thursday’s round will earn berths in the state finals on June 2-4 at Robert Trent Jones Golf Course at Cornell University in Ithaca.
