Ryann Gaffney, Sarah Agrillo and Abby Maichin scored three goals each, but the Huntington girls’ lacrosse team was overwhelmed in the second half, falling to Farmingdale at Blue Devil Field, 13-11.
Huntington played well during the first half, working through several changes in momentum. The Blue Devils held an 8-7 halftime advantage, but Farmingdale wasn’t finished quite yet.
With Huntington leading 10-8, Farmingdale went on to score five of the game’s final six goals to snatch a victory away from the Blue Devils.
Agrillo fell to the turf near Farmingdale’s goal early in the second half and had to be helped off the field. She wasn’t able to return and her absence stung. The loss of such a talented player and goal scorer was felt by Huntington, especially when it found itself behind in the final minutes.
Farmingdale went ahead 11-10 with 7:31 remaining in the game and the Blue Devils couldn’t make it up regardless of how hard players tried.
Marissa Stafford and Emma Greenhill also scored in the game for Huntington. Emma Petrizzi had an assist. Goalies Megan Bacik (four) and Maya Santa-Maria (five) recorded nine saves for the Blue Devils.
Farmingdale goalies McKenzie Gaghan (four) and Reilly Agres (seven) combined to stop 11 Huntington shots, including several blistering ones in the final minutes.
“I think we started off really strong in the first half and that we just need to keep up with that same intensity the entire game,” Greenhill said. “We did a lot of good things in the midfield with clearing the ball and on both ends of the field. It’s an unfortunate loss, but I’m glad it was a non-league because it gives us time to work out all of the minor things before our league games.”
Huntington is captained by Camille Stafford, Noelle Harvey, Allyson Arleo, Gaffney, Greenhill and Stieve. The team is coached by Kim Gilroy, Linda Costello-Roth and Elizabeth Vogelsang.
The Blue Devils return to the field on Wednesday when Huntington hosts Lindenhurst at 4 p.m. The team will also play at home on Friday when Smithtown East visits. That game will also start at 4 p.m.
