There was plenty of fun to go around during last week’s Family STEM Night sponsored by the Jefferson Primary School PTA. Students and family members were immersed in activities centered on science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
“We read the books Iggy Peck Architect by Andrea Beaty and Going Places by Peter and Paul Reynolds and focused on 21st century skills of communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity,” Jefferson Principal Valerie Capitulo-Saide said. “Families collaborated, planned and created tall towers with spaghetti, tape, string, marshmallows, solo cups and paper.”
The hands-on activities were led by the PTA, teachers, staff and Ms. Capitulo-Saide. Jefferson PTA co-President Jennifer Biancardo coordinated the event.

Jefferson’s January Math Challenge Winners
Jefferson Primary School students are stepping up the challenges posed by modern day math. Math teacher Luz Marotta coordinates a monthly Math Challenge that involves the third and fourth graders she works with answering questions on their own time.
The multi-step word problems are aligned with the current state math modules. Students are required to think deeply, choose the appropriate concept for application and explain their work. Winners are selected and celebrated each month.
The latest group of honorees includes Lucas Biancardo, Emma Boyle, Ronnie, Noah Garcia and Ilianna Jarmolowski.
