One of Huntington’s greatest athletes ever has been inducted into the NCAA Division III Wrestling Hall of Fame.
Stef Sair, a member of Huntington’s Class of 2002 was inducted prior to the finals of the national tournament in LaCrosse, Wisconsin.
At Huntington, Sair was an All-Long Island football player and earned six varsity letters in wrestling, culminating with the 2002 New York State championship. He won four league mat crowns and was All-Suffolk three times en route to 136 career victories.
Sair went on to win All-American football honors and the NCAA wrestling championship at SUNY Cortland.
In his four seasons with the Cortland wrestling team, Sair earned three NCAA Division III All-America wrestling honors, including a national title at 174 pounds in 2006 and a national runner-up finish at 184 pounds in 2007. He also was a three-time Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference champion and the conference’s Most Outstanding Wrestler twice. He was all-state three times at the all-divisions New York State Collegiate Wrestling Conference Championships.
Sair completed his collegiate mat career with an 80-14 record that included 12 pins, six technical falls and 22 major decisions. He went 21-2 as a sophomore, 27-2 as a junior and 22-3 as a senior.
Sair’s time on the mat was somewhat limited by the fact that he was also a standout safety on Cortland’s football team for four seasons. He was an All-East and All-New Jersey Athletic Conference selection four times, and All-Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) on three occasions. In his senior year, he also earned All-America recognition as a punt returner.
Maya DelGiudice Hurls Complete Game Victory
Maya DelGiudice pitched a complete game victory to lift Huntington over visiting Copiague, 19-8. The sophomore struck out seven batters to give the Blue Devils their first win of the spring.
Sarah Grassi collected four hits and drove in three runs. Isabella Toscano banged out three hits and had four runs batted in. Anna Wickey went 3-for-4 with five RBIs.
Alum Sets UMass Amherst Goal Record
Former Blue Devil athletic great Hannah Burnett set a University of Massachusetts Amherst record last weekend by scoring eight goals in a 24-14 victory over St. Joseph’s University.
A member of Huntington High School’s Class of 2013, Burnett was All-County in both soccer and lacrosse for the Blue Devils and also played two years of basketball. She is one of the top scorers in the history of Huntington girls’ lacrosse.
Burnett added two assists against St. Joseph’s to tie the UMass Amherst record for points in a single game with 10. Entering this week the Huntington alum has tallied 30 goals and seven assists in 10 games.
Huntington Girls’ Lax Coasts to 15-3 Win
The Huntington girls’ lacrosse team jumped out to an insurmountable 10-1 halftime lead on its way to a 15-3 victory over visiting Lindenhurst.
Isabella Piccola (two goals, two assists), Ryann Gaffney (2g, 1a), Sydney Van den Valentyn (2g, 1a), Bella Annunziata (2g), Emma Greenhill (2g), Emma Petrizzi (1g, 1a), Amber Stieve (1g, 1a), Abby Maichin (1g), Marissa Stafford (1g), Paige Lennon (1g) all contributed to the Blue Devil offense. Goalie Megan Bacik made four saves.
Blue Devil Baseball Wins Biggest Game in Years
The Huntington varsity baseball team captured its biggest victory in years on Wednesday afternoon, toppling 2016 state finalist West Islip on the Lions home field, 4-1.
Luke Eidle was masterful, hurling five innings and keeping West Islip off balance throughout the game. Matt DeMeo came on to throw two scoreless innings in relief to earn the save.
DeMeo went 3-for-4 with a single, double and homerun. He drove in two runs and scored twice. Steven Napurano banged out two hits and drove in a run. Michael Harris reached base twice and scored two runs. The senior ignited both Huntington rallies.
Camille Stafford Named to Newday’s Top 100
Huntington senior Camille Stafford has been named one of Newday’s Long Island Top 100 high school girls’ lacrosse players this season. The teenager has overcome knee injuries to become one of the best low defenders in the country. She has also been on the Blue Devil soccer and swimming teams. She is headed to the University of Southern California next fall where she will play on the Trojan’s women’s lacrosse team.
Sam Bergman Stops 18 Shots in Goal
Garrett Moya scored the Huntington boys’ lacrosse team’s lone goal in a 12-1 loss to powerful Ward Melville. Sam Bergman stopped 18 shots in goal.
The Blue Devils trailed 2-1 after one period and 5-1 at halftime. Ward Melville went on to outscore Huntington 7-0 in the second half to put the game away.
Finley Girls’ Volleyball Wins Award
The J. Taylor Finley Middle School girls’ volleyball team has captured Section XI’s Sportsmanship Award for the winter season.
The Falcons were coached by Lauren Visbal and captained by Gigi Devoe, Marina Durand, Gracie Renkewitz and Julia Steinberg.
Section XI coaches assign a rating to opposing teams following each contest. The ratings are compiled and sportsmanship awards are presented to the top ranked teams in each league in each sport.
Boys’ Lax Duo Named to Newsday’s Top 100
Huntington seniors Garrett Moya and Austin Reda have been named to Newday’s list of the Top 100 Long Island boys’ lacrosse players.
Mr. Moya had 60 goals and 29 assists for Huntington as a junior. The teenager plays attack and his 89 points last season ranked him second in Suffolk and third on Long Island. He will play lacrosse for Marquette University.
Mr. Reda tallied 26 goals and 17 assists from his offensive midfielder position as a junior. He’s headed to St. John’s University next fall and will play lacrosse for the Red Storm.
Jack Flores Lifts Blue Devils
All-State freshman Jack Flores won in straight sets in No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-0 to lift the Huntington boys’ tennis team over visiting Ross, 6-1. The Blue Devils are coached by Jamie Fishlow.
Reid Bellistri, Cody Bograd, Stefan Breskin, Kyle Chin, Max Gordon, Noah Helburn, Nick Newell, Michael Russak and Jacob Strieb round out Huntington’s roster.
Matt Gelb Nets Four Goals for H-ton Lax
The Huntington boys’ lacrosse team fell at Bay Shore, 13-9. The Blue Devils trailed throughout the game, falling behind 5-3 by the end of the first period and 7-5 at halftime. The Marauders outscored the visitors in the second half, 6-4.
Matt Gelb led Huntington with four goals. Garret Moya tallied a goal and four assists. Pat Durand scored twice. Freddie Amato and Jared Leake also scored. Matt Mattiace had an assist. Sam Bergman recorded seven saves in goal.
Abby Maichin Scores Two Goals
The Huntington girls’ lacrosse team trailed visiting Smithtown East at halftime, 5-2. The Blue Devils couldn’t gain any ground in the second half, falling 8-5.
Abby Maichin paced the Blue Devils with two goals and an assist. Emma Greenhill, Amber Stieve and Ryann Gaffney also scored goals. Goalies Maya Santa-Maria (three saves) and Megan Bacik (two saves) combined to stop five shots.
