Ryan Mock won five matches and captured the 113 lb. weight class and Most Outstanding Wrestler Award to pace the Huntington wrestling team last Saturday in the “A” bracket in a round robin tournament at Louis D. Giani Gymnasium.

Mock pinned three foes and took a 19-1 technical fall and 7-2 decision en route to his title. The senior is ranked No. 4 in Suffolk and is Huntington’s best wrestler.

Teams from Patchogue-Medford, Kings Park, Port Jefferson, Harborfields and New York City’s Grand Street Campus vied against the Blue Devils during the course of five rounds. The tournament stretched until the early evening.

“There were some very tough matches today,” said Travis Smith, Huntington’s head coach. The tournament featured A and B brackets, which separated some of the more experienced wrestlers from those who have less time logged on the mat.

Huntington senior Charlie Gadson won three matches, including pins in 1:13 and 1:29 and a 10-4 decision to grab the 220 lb. weight class crown. Aiden McCooey (170 lbs.) and Khari McNeil (285 lbs.) both took second place in their respective weight class.

McCooey’s victories included a pin in 5:59 and a 10-4 decision. He also won a match when one of his opponents forfeited. McNeil pinned three foes in 2:51, 2:18, 0:26 and 1:55. His only loss came to Harborfields’ Sean Dall, 1-0.

Sean Flick placed third at 99 lbs., notching pins in 0:48, 1:06 and 5:15. Aeden McDonald was third at 106 lbs., picking up a pin in 1:50. Robert Simon was third at 180 lbs. with 5-4 and 1-0 decisions. Ryan Stieve took fourth place at 195 lbs. with a pin in 2:44.

Isiah Rodriquez (120 lbs.), Taji Anthony (126 lbs.) and Kareem Chapman (152 lbs.) all took fifth place in their respective weight class. William Mejia placed sixth at 145 lbs.

Smith is assisted by Kieran Mock and Peter Fusco. “We have a lot of work to do,” Smith said. “We see plenty to work on.”

The Blue Devils travel to Miller Place on Saturday for another tournament before beginning their dual meet schedule the following week.
