The Huntington High School girls’ lacrosse team is hurting. The Blue Devils have five players sidelined with injuries. The squad is trying to play through this stretch and hoping for better days ahead.
Huntington dropped an 11-8 verdict to Harborfields last Friday afternoon at Blue Devil Field. Blue Devil senior tallied six goals and two assists and sophomore Emma Greenhill notched a pair of goals. Elizabeth Berejka stopped six shots in goal.
Huntington led early in the game, but the Tornadoes came storming back and led 5-3 at halftime. The Blue Devils were outscored in the second half, 6-5.
DeGennaro has 22 goals and nine assists through the first five games of the season. The senior is headed to Brown University in the fall. She plans to play on the NCAA Division I women’s lacrosse team there.
Huntington hopes to have several of their injured stars back on the field within the next two weeks and plans to make a push for a post-season berth.
Cody Bograd Paces H-ton Tennis
The Huntington boys tennis team coasted past host Harborfields, 5-2 as No. 2 singles Cody Bograd won 6-1, 6-0 to pace the Blue Devils.
Coached by Jamie Fishlow, Huntington is 6-1 entering the week.
Blue Devil JV Improves to 6-0
Tied at halftime, 3-3, the Blue Devil junior varsity girls’ lacrosse team staged an impressive second half rally to defeat host Harborfields, 12-4 last Friday afternoon. The victory was Huntington’s sixth without a loss this spring.
Coached by Kim Gilroy and Linda Costello-Roth, the Blue Devils field a strong lineup. Against Harborfields, Abby Maichin had three goals and two assists and Sydney Van den Valentyn added two goals and an assist. Paige Lennon scored twice and Marissa Stafford and Kay Rosselli each had a goal and an assist. Jessica Greene and Synclair Taylor also scored one goal each in the game.
H-ton Falters in Second Half at SWR
The Huntington girls’ lacrosse team stayed within striking distance last week at Shoreham-Wading River before faltering in the second half as the Blue Devils were outscored 9-2 on the way to losing 19-8.
Emma DeGennaro led Huntington with four goals. Camille Stafford scored twice and Irina DeSimone and Ryann Gaffney also found the back of the net. Elizabeth Berejka made four saves. SWR goalie Gabby Cacciola stopped six Blue Devil shots.
Huge Game for Moya & H-ton Boys’ Lax
Garrett Moya notched five goals and added an assist to help the Huntington boys’ lacrosse team topple host Copiague, 17-2.
The Blue Devils were on fire early, methodically building a 9-0 first period lead as Moya tallied all six of his points in the opening 12 minutes.
Jared Leake won 18-of-21 face-offs and Matt Mattiace had a goal and three assists. Donnie Stewart recorded six saves in goal and Sam Bergman stopped a pair of shots.
Huntington’s offense was really clicking. Austin Reda (2g; 1a), Ryan Gorecki (2g), Colby Martin (2g), Joe Livoti (1g), Ryan Stieve (1g), John Stolfa (1g), Alex LaBella (1g), Freddie Amato (1g), Thomas Goldsmith (3a), Nat Amato (2a), Matt Gelb, Dan Brown (1a) and Gerard Federici (1a) and had points in the game.
Freshman Swimmer Tom Peer a Fierce Competitor
Freshman Tommy Peer turned in a very nice season with the Huntington boys’ swimming and diving team. The teenager was a consistent scorer in the breaststroke and freestyle.
“Tommy is always a fierce competitor and a strong sprinter,” head coach Meg McConnell said. “He continues to be clutch in the relays while he is on the cusp of breaking through to the top level of swimmers in his individual events.”
Nat Amato Notches Three Goals for H-ton Lax
Nat Amato had three goals and an assist, but the Huntington boys’ lacrosse team fell to visiting West Islip on Saturday, 13-9. The Blue Devils trailed 5-2 after the first period and 7-4 at halftime.
Austin Reda had two goals and an assist and Ryan Gorecki scored a goal and added an assist for Huntington. Garrett Moya, Matt Gelb and Thomas Goldsmith also scored goals in the game. Sam Bergman stopped 12 shots in the Blue Devil goal.
Huntington had trouble throughout the game controlling the draw. The Blue Devils were outscored in the second had 6-5.
