The Huntington High School baseball team captured its biggest victory in several seasons when it nipped visiting Half Hollow Hills West in dramatic fashion, 3-2 on a chilly afternoon.
With the scored knotted 2-2, the Blue Devils loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning. Up to the plate came junior Tom Stock, who drove in the winning run with a walk-off hit to the gap in left centerfield. The teenager’s teammates mobbed him on the field.
Luke Eidle was masterful on the mound, striking out three and surrendering just four hits while earning a complete game victory.
Stock went 2-for4 with a run scored and an RBI. Gavin Crockett has a triple and run scored. Catcher Brian Donnelly collected a hit and an RBI and threw out a runner trying to steal.
Brian Mora belted out a double and scored a run. He also made a beautiful catch in the infield and then doubled the runner off second base to end the inning. Michael Harris made a diving catch in right field to prevent multiple runs from scoring.
“Overall, the team played a great defensive game, had great pitching and hit the baseball at will,” first year coach Billy Harris said.
Blue Devil Alum Scores for Furman
Huntington High School Class of 2013 member Patrick Reilly scored a goal for the Furman University men’s lacrosse team, helping the Paladins defeat Jacksonville in a Southern Conference matchup, 13-7 on Saturday afternoon.
The 6’2, 185 lb. Reilly found the back of the cage in the second period to give Furman a 7-5 lead. The game was played on Furman’s campus in Greenville, South Carolina. The Blue Devil alum has appeared in all nine games for the Paladins this season.
A two-time All-Division player for the Huntington lacrosse team, Reilly was named All-County as a senior, when he tallied 27 goals and 12 assists. He captained the Blue Devils’ 2013 team that reached the Suffolk finals.
Reilly had 24 goals and eight assists as a Huntington junior and three goals as a sophomore, when the team reach the county finals. He captured All-League and All-Conference honors in basketball and served as team captain during his senior year. The former Blue Devil great also earned varsity letters with Huntington’s soccer and football teams.
Blue Devil Boys’ Lax Tops Sachem North
The Huntington boys’ lacrosse team jumped out to an early lead and went on to topple visiting Sachem North last Friday afternoon, 11-8. It marked the Blue Devils’ first win of the season.
Huntington led 3-1 after the first period and 6-3 at halftime. Nat Amato had three goals to pace the Blue Devils. Thomas Goldsmith and Matt Gelb each had a pair of goals and an assist. Ryan Gorecki also scored two goals. Garrett Moya had a goal and five assists. Austin Reda scored a goal and Mark Rafuse and Mike Abbondandelo each had an assist.
The Blue Devils benefitted by the sharp play of goalie Sam Bergman, who stopped 17 shots. Sachem North goalie Jacob Giacalone recorded 11 saves.
Abby Maichin Powers H-ton JV Girls’ Lax
The Huntington junior varsity girls’ lacrosse team won its fourth straight game without a loss, topping visiting Westhampton Beach on Saturday morning, 13-0.
The Blue Devils high powered offense was led by Abby Maichin, who tallied four goals and an assist. Sydney Van den Valentyn had three goals and two assists, Synclair Taylor had two goals and Alyssa Sorensen added a goal and four assists.
The noon game was played in less than optimal weather conditions, but Huntington made the best of it. Jessica Greene and Leah Annunziata each contributed a goal and an assist. Mary Brown also scored. Kay Rosselli, Brooke Goldsmith and Holly Wright all picked up one assist each.
Maya Santa-Maria was sensational in goal, stopping 11 shots to record a shutout.
Emma DeGennaro Has 6 Goals; 2 Assists
Senior Emma DeGennaro put on a show, scoring six goals and assisting on two others, but the Huntington varsity girls’ lacrosse team lost at home to Rocky Point last Thursday, 18-9.
DeGennaro was impressive and so was Ryann Gaffney, who had two goals and an assist. Emma Greenhill also scored for the Blue Devils. Megan Bacik had 12 saves in goal.
Huntington trailed at halftime, 12-4 and the Blue Devils were unable to cut their deficit in the second half. The victory improved Rocky Point’s record to 4-0.
Nate Gamboa Shines in Pool for H-ton
Huntington freshman Nate Gamboa shined in the pool this past winter for the Blue Devil swimming and diving team. The teenager captured All-League honors in the 200 yard medley relay and the 100 breaststroke and was a consistent scorer in multiple events.
“Nate is an extremely talented and versatile athlete,” said Meg McConnell, Huntington’s head coach. “He’s been a great contributor in all events and has been an outstanding teammate and mentor to our novice and new athletes.”
Open Invitation to Booster Club Meeting
The Huntington Booster Club will meet on Tuesday, April 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the J. Taylor Finley Middle School library. The meeting is open to the public.

Huntington High School seniors Tom Kopstein and Justin Martinolich are interning with the organization this year.
