Huntington Boys’ Tennis Compiles
10-7 Mark
The Huntington High School varsity boys’ tennis team struggled at times in Suffolk League I play, but more than made up for it in non-league matches.
Coached by Jamie Fishlow, the Blue Devils compiled a 4-6 league record, but went 10-7 overall. Huntington finished fourth in the league standings.
Senior captains Alex Castillo and Brian Gilbert formed a potent No. 1 doubles team and earned All-League honors for their fine play. Senior Tyler Cook, who held down the No. 4 singles position, garnered a league Sportsmanship Award.
“It was a hardworking and very cooperative team,” Fishlow said. “We got the most out of their ability.”
Huntington victories came against Hauppauge (7-0), West Islip (5-2), Islip (6-1), Harborfields (7-0), Smithtown East (7-0 and 5-2), Walt Whitman (4-3 and 6-1), St. Anthony’s (4-3) and Miller Place (5-2). The Blue Devils dropped matches against Half Hollow Hills West (7-0 and 6-1), Half Hollow Hills East (7-0 and 7-0), Commack (7-0 and 7-0) and East Islip (5-2).
In addition to Castillo, Gilbert and Cook, Huntington’s top players included sophomore No. 1 singles Marco Ammirati, freshman No. 2 singles Cody Bograd and junior No. 3 singles Patrick Lombardi.
“Cook, Castillo and Gilbert were great leaders and gave their all,” Fishlow said. “Ammirati, Bograd and Lombardi all have good futures. They won some very big matches.”
The roster also included sophomores Will Fehrs, Stefano Ornato and Aaron Wohl, juniors Shane Meyers and Michael Nemaric and seniors Andres Perez Roa and Matthew Sherman.
Advancing to the second round of the Section XI playoffs was the team’s major accomplishment this spring. Huntington was seeded 12th in the Division I tournament.
“We were very competitive in all matches,” Fishlow said. “We are generally a young team with a lot of potential.”
The Blue Devils will remain in tough League I next year. “We are losing a few starters and have a strong junior varsity to fill in the spots,” Fishlow said.
