Huntington High School Class of 2011 member Emilie Pugliese notched a hat-trick for the High Point University women's lacrosse team, which went on to defeat visiting Winthrop University, 21-5. The three goals are the first of Pugliese's college career. She suffered a knee injury in her first college season and required surgery to repair her ACL. The long climb back to playing field is now complete.

The 5'2 Pugliese was one of the greatest players in Huntington High School girls' lacrosse history. She scored 77 goals and added 84 assists, winning All-Division, All-County and All-Tournament honors along the way.

Pugliese wears uniform No. 16 and plays attack for High Point. She is a redshirt freshman after sitting out last season. The Huntington alum was named a Millis Scholar-Athlete this year. High Point recognizes student-athletes, cheerleaders, dance team and band members as well as athletic training students who achieve a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 or a grade point average of 3.0 or higher for either of the previous two semesters.

Pugliese intends to major in exercise science at High Point.

Burnett & Thompson Put on Show

Hannah Burnett scored six goals and added two assists and Alexis Thompson had four goals and six assists to help lift the Huntington High School girls' lacrosse team over host Kings Park in double overtime, 16-15.

Blue Devil sophomore attack Alyssa Amorison scored the winning goal off a Thompson assist with two minutes remaining in the second extra frame. Amorison had two goals and five assists in the game.

Huntington (5-1) trailed 12-11 with 20 seconds remaining before Burnett sent the game into overtime with a blistering shot that reached the back of the net. Sarah Fernandez had two goals. Katie Reilly and Annie Nugent also scored for the Blue Devils.

Anna Tesoriero made six saves in the net for Huntington. Taylor Moreno (three saves) and Fiona Geier (two saves) also saw action in the net for the Blue Devils.

Burnett has 33 goals and 17 assists through the first six games. Thompson has scored 21 goals and assisted on 23 others. Amorison had contributed eight goals and 19 assists.

Fiato Smacks Homer

Huntington senior Rob Fiato smacked a homerun but the Blue Devil baseball team fell to visiting Bellport, 8-3.

Two Homeruns Not Enough

Sophomore catcher Tara Byrnes and sophomore third baseman Marygrace Trousdell blasted homeruns, but visiting Islip topped the Huntington softball team, 7-3.

BOE Approves Volunteer Coach

William Harris has been approved to serve as a volunteer baseball coach at J. Taylor Finley Middle School this spring. He has also coached football at Finley. He earned an associate of arts degree at SUNY Farmingdale in 1990.

Mr. Harris is a certified first responder and is certified in first aid and CPR/AED. He holds a New York State temporary coaching license.

Two Wins for HHS Boys' Lax

The Huntington boys' lacrosse team topped Westhampton Beach in thrilling fashion when Billy Martin scored the game winning goal off an assist from Christian Fiordelisi with 56 seconds remaining in the first overtime period.

The Hurricanes led 4-2 at halftime and held a 5-4 advantage late in regulation until Martin tied the score with 3:24 remaining in the fourth quarter. Ben Kocis had two goals and one assists. Pat Reilly and Connor Birchard each added one goal and one assist, respectively. Tyler Greenhill made nine saves in goal for Huntington. Dom Tesoriero also recorded a save in goal for the Blue Devils.

Huntington had a much easier time when it turned back Greenport/Southold/Mattituck, 14-0. The Blue Devils offense was provided by Ben Kocis (two goals, two assists), Pat Reilly (2g, 2a), Tom Plant (2g), Connor Birchard (1g, 3a), Matt Whitcher (2g), Chris Schoen (1g), Billy Martin (1g), Ryan Casale (1g), Brian Peer (1g), Jeremy Gelb (1g, 1a), Tim Mattiace (1a), Spencer Young (1a), Kyle O'Bryan (1a), Kieran McGovern (1a), and Christian Fiordelisi (2a).

Huntington goalies Dom Tesoriero (six saves), Nick Stern (two saves), John Russo (one save) and Tyler Greenhill (one save) combined for the shutout.

Johnson Leads H-ton Tennis

The Huntington boys' tennis team looked sharp during a 6-1 victory over visiting Kings Park. Sam Johnson captured No. 1 singles for the Blue Devils, 6-1, 6-0.
