Blue Devil Boys' Tennis Wins
League Crown
A young Huntington High School varsity boys' tennis team won the League II championship this past spring under head coach Jamie Fishlow. The Blue Devils compiled a mark of 9-1 (9-4 overall) and featured an assortment of promising players.
Huntington was led by first and second singles players Sam Johnson and Max Fehrs and doubles players Jeffrey Sun, Justin LoTurco and Brian Gilbert. Johnson and Sun earned All-League honors for their fine play. Benjamin Wohl won a Suffolk Tennis Coaches Assn. Sportsmanship Award.
"Sam and Max have grown in their roles as our top players, "Fishlow said. "Their games have matured and their ability to win matches has improved as well." Johnson went 6-9 overall in the No. 1 slot and Fehrs finished with a 9-5 record in the No. 2 position. The players are both juniors.
Sun, a senior who is headed to Stony Brook University, teamed up with freshman Cooper Wakhale in No. 2 doubles and went 6-5 against some tough opponents. "Jeff learned to compete at a higher level this season," Fishlow said.
Seventh grader Cody Bograd was 7-6 in No. 3 singles and junior Max Zelinka finished 10-3 in No. 4 singles. LoTurco, a talented freshman, joined with Gilbert, a skilled sophomore, to go 6-7 in No. 1 doubles. Junior Brian Marek and Wohl, one of three graduating seniors on the team, were 5-4 in No. 3 doubles.
"It was a very young team with talent," Fishlow said. "They were a tight-knit group that got along. They are gradually learning to reach their potential. Most of the line-up will return next year. We are looking for strong competition for spots coming from the junior varsity program. We want to fight for the league championship."
